The Greene County softball team went 2-1 in conference competition this past week winning both of their home games, but letting one get away from them on the road. Marissa Promes handled the pitching duties for all the three varsity league games played this week and had an impressive 24 strike outs to 5 walks ratio on the mound.

After defeating Saydel in the season opener, the Rams hosted Roland-Story on May 28 and won 5-1. Both teams were scoreless in the first two innings, but the Rams took the lead in the third inning when they capitalized on Norsemen walks and an Emily Christensen triple to score three runs.

Marissa Promes delivered the final offensive blow with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Other Rams getting hits in the game were Tressa Rasmussen with two singles, and Kayla Mobley, Emma Saddoris, and Sydney Koch with one single apiece. Besides Christensen and Promes, Carleigh Paup was also credited with an RBI. Promes had a great night pitching giving up only two hits, walking no batters, and striking out eight.

The team went on the road to Monroe on Friday night. PCM was one of the teams that shared the conference crown last year matching the Rams 13-5 league record, so the squad knew this game could be a challenge. PCM jumped out to an early lead when returning all- conference catcher Abby Gilson hit a homer in the first inning. The Rams held the Mustangs scoreless for the next five innings. In the top of the fifth inning, Bailey Godwin hit a double and Emma Saddoris followed it with a single. A PCM error allowed, both to score, so the Rams took a 2-1 lead. Greene County added another run in the sixth when Hannah Onken led off with a single and pinch runner, Hannah Promes scored after PCM committed two more errors.

The Mustangs rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning and took advantage of two walks, a seeing eye single, and a sharply hit double to score three runs and win the game 4-3. PCM came from behind in the bottom of the seventh inning in 2013 to win the second game of a double header between the two teams. The Rams had their chances to win as they left eight runners on base throughout the game and were held to five hits - two singles by Saddoris, one double by Godwin, and one single each by Christensen, and Onken. Marissa Promes was the losing pitcher giving up five hits and four earned runs, while walking three, and fanning nine batters. “We didn’t hit well enough to win and left too many runners on base,” said coach Tom Kennedy.

The final conference game of the week was on June 2 when the Rams hosted Colfax-Mingo. Marissa Promes pitched the 4-0 victory giving up only two hits, issuing two walks, and striking out seven batters. The squad took advantage of four Tigerhawk errors, and got eight hits from five players to fuel the offensive attack.  Mobley had a double and a  single, while Paup and Koch each connected for two singles, and Onken and Rasmussen got one single each. Greene County was without two members of their squad. Lead off hitter Emma Saddoris was sidelined due to an ankle injury and Hannah Promes who usually is a pinch runner did not play because of a sore hip. “Marissa pitched very well tonight, and we fielded the ball well to support her,” said coach Tom Kennedy. “We hit the ball pretty consistently considering that Colfax-Mingo had an experienced pitcher.”
