Both Greene County teams got their first taste of competition at an indoor meet held at Buena Vista University on Mar. 21. Twenty teams from all classes participated in the event, but no team scores were tallied. The Ram teams garnered 21 top ten finishes at the six plus hour meet and also set two meet records. Roman Phillips set a new meet record in the 200 meters with a time of 23.81 seconds, and the girls shuttle hurdle relay team of Eme Johnson, Kate Sandage, Sarah Sandage, and Nadia

Fisher bettered the old meet record by one tenth of a second winning in :40.35. Phillips also won the 60 meter dash in 7.24 seconds, and Johnson continued her winning ways by placing first in the 60 meter hurdles in :10.15, edging her teammate Kate Sandage by .02 seconds.

Other top ten girls finishes were: 4 x 800 relay (Emily Christensen, Olivia Hansen, Noelle Gray, Allison Higgins), 3rd place 11:01.07; 1500 m run ( Higgins), 4th place, 5:32.74; 4 x 200 relay (Christensen, Emma Saddoris, Hansen, Johnson) 4th place, 1:55.59; High Jump (Fisher), 4th place 5’ 0”; High Jump (Mollie Sorber), 8th place, 4’ 6”; long jump (Saddoris), fifth place, 15’ 3-1/2”; 200 meter dash (Kate Sandage),  7th place, 29.72; 4 x 400 meter relay (Johnson, Christensen, Hansen, Fisher), 4th place, 4:24.2; 60 meter dash (Saddoris), 9th place, 8.66 seconds.

“I’d have to say in the many years we have been going to this meet, tonight’s results were the best events placing that we have ever had,” said coach Kelly Simpson. “This meet is quickly turning into a 4A-3A dominant meet with the newcomers Fort Dodge High, Sioux City North, and Glenwood making the trip. This is a very good start for March 21, but there is also lots of room for improvement.”

The boys team also had a good showing. Besides Phillips two first place finishes, the boys events that placed in the top ten were: Shot Put (Alex Rasmussen), 4th place, 47’ 0”; 4 x 200 relay (Dylan Hamilton, T. J. Lint, Max Neese, Phillips), 4th place, 1:38.11; 60 meter hurdles (Daric Whipple), 6th place, :9.24 seconds; 60 meter hurdles (Dylan Mc Connell), 7th place, :9.28 seconds; Shuttle hurdle relay (McConnell, Whipple, Tyler Beger, Jordan Hostetler), 7th place, :38.86; Long Jump (Mitchell Gorsuch), 9th place, 18’ 3”; High Jump (Gorsuch), 9th place, 5’ 8”.

“Overall, I was very happy with our results considering we had some kids competing in events that they have never done before,” said coach Dean Lansman. “Our times and distances this year were ahead of where these same athletes were last year. Roman Phillips had an awesome meet.”
