Rams sweep road triangular, Dennhardt named outstanding wrestler at Charger Invite

As the regular season is beginning to wind down for the Greene County High School wrestling team, the Rams are beginning to hum along nicely. It’s much needed too, as the Rams will aim at sending plenty of grapplers to the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

This past week, things have been good for the grapplers in red and black, beginning with a sweep of CAM and Manson-Northwest Webster in a triangular held on Jan. 23 at the MNW Gymnasium in Manson. The Rams soundly defeated CAM with a 57-21 decision, before making easy work of the hosting Cougars with a favorable 66-12 result.

The pair of wins on the mat helped the Rams improve to a 12-7 record in duals.

At a loaded Charger Invitational, held last Saturday at the ACGC High School Gym in Guthrie Center, the Rams saw seven of its 11 representatives land spots on the podium. 

Greene County placed fourth as a team with 164.5 points. Southeast Polk won the 21-team meet with 254 points, followed by Earlham’s 193 points and Pleasantville’s 174 points.

Junior Brent Dennhardt continued his incredible campaign with a 165 lbs. title and getting named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler. Greene County also posted two runners-up in senior Gavin Scheuermann and junior Crew Conner.

The Rams have a little bit of time on their hands, but will gear up for two more duals next Tuesday at the Woodward-Granger High School Gym in Woodward. There, Greene County will grapple with Webster City and the hosting Hawks.

On Feb. 10, the Rams will take part in the IHSAA Class 2A-District 1 Tournament, which will take place at the Atlantic High School Gym in Atlantic.

In their victory over CAM, the Rams saw junior Gavyn Winters (20-7, 120 lbs.), senior Jackson Turner (30-15, 150 lbs.), and junior Marcus Ball (20-18, 215 lbs.) record wins on the mat. Freshman Jaron Jacobs (24-12, 106 lbs.), teammate Brennan Jacobs (22-11, 113 lbs.), junior Jacob Harmeyer (19-9, 126 lbs.), Conner (26-16, 138 lbs.), freshman Nehemiah Hoyt (13-9, 157 lbs.), Dennhardt (36-3, 165 lbs.), and sophomore Eli Schroeder (4-7, 190 lbs.) pick up forfeit wins.  

Against Manson-Northwest Webster, plenty of Rams reeled in wins on the mat with Brennan Jacobs, Harmeyer, senior Kolby Angell (6-2, 132 lbs.), Conner, senior Zeke Binkley (14-9, 144 lbs.), Turner, Scheuermann (25-3, 157 lbs.), Dennhardt, freshman Degan Miller (27-14, 175 lbs.) and Ball. Winters picked up the lone forfeit win for the Rams.

In extras, Hoyt and Schroeder each recorded wins over their opponents.

At the Charger Invitational, Dennhardt paced the Rams with three pinfalls and a favorable 9-4 decision over Earlham’s Ryan Stiles in the 165 lbs. championship match. Scheuermann came close to earning the top spot in the 157 lbs. bracket, only falling to Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas’ Chaz Graves in a narrow 6-5 decision in the championship bout.

Conner had an impressive run, defeating two opponents by pinfall and another by way of a decision, before dropping against Pleasantville’s Caleb Cook in the 138 lbs. title match.

Brennan Jacobs captured fifth place in the 113 lbs. weight class, alongside Miller fifth place finish in the 175 lbs. subdivision. Jaron Jacobs took sixth in the 106 lbs. weight class, while Turner placed sixth in the 150 lbs. Bracket.

Winters, Harmeyer, Binkley and Ball also represented Greene County in Guthrie Center.
