Rams sweep home duals, Scheuermann earns 100th win at HOIAC tournament

With only a few weeks left in the 2023-2024 season, the Greene County High School wrestling team is beginning to pick up some steam. And there was no way of getting things rolling than to wrestle in front of a home crowd.

The Rams were stellar in their recent stretch, starting with a sweep of their opposition at a home quadrangular held on Jan. 16 at the Greene County Gym in Jefferson, followed by a runner-up finish at the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference Wrestling Tournament, held last Friday at the PCM High School Gym in Monroe.

At the home meet, the Rams cruised past Coon Rapids-Bayard with a 54-12 decision, prevailed against Nevada with a 53-21 result and outpaced Perry with a 54-18 final score. 

By going 3-0 on the night, the Rams improved to a duals record of 10-7.

In the land of the Mustangs, the Rams saw senior Gavin Scheuermann record his 100th career victory en route to being one of two champions, alongside junior Brent Dennhard’s title run. The red and black grapplers also picked up two runners-up, four third place finishers and three fourth place wrestlers.

This past Tuesday, the Rams went on the road to tangle with CAM and Manson-Northwest Webster for a triangular at the MNW Gymnasium in Manson. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Greene County will embark on a trip to Guthrie Center for the Charger Invitational, which will take place at the ACGC High School Gym.

In their win over the Crusaders, the Rams saw junior Gavyn Winters, senior Zeke Binkley, teammate Jackson Turner, Scheuermann, Dennhardt and junior Marcus Ball pick up victories on the mat. Freshman Brennan Jacobs, senior Kolby Angell, junior Crew Conner and freshman Degan Miller collect wins through forfeit.

Within their dual victory over the Cubs, the Rams reeled in wins on the canvas through Winters, junior Jacob Harmeyer, Angell, Binkley, Scheuermann, Dennhardt, Miller and Ball. Conner won through forfeit, as freshman Nehemiah Hoyt and teammate Matthew Rank won exhibition matches for the red and black.

In their final dual of the evening against the Bluejays, Greene County came up with wins from Winters, Harmeyer, Angell, Conner, Turner, Miller and Ball off of the mat. Jacobs, Binkley, Scheuermann and Dennhardt had their hands raised through forfeit.

In the exhibition matches, freshman Roman Sebourn picked up a favorable 9-6 decision.

Before moving into the weekend, the Rams enjoyed a successful night against their conference brethren.

On his way to claiming tournament gold within the 157 lbs. bracket, Scheuermann (21-2) pinned Saydel’s Boyd Jones in 1:33 before putting Nevada’s Austin Boege’s shoulders to the mat in 50 seconds to pick up his 100th career win. In the championship match, Scheuermann defeated South Hamilton’s Keyton Remsburg with a 7-1 decision.

Dennhardt needed just two matches to claim the 165 lbs. title, pinning South Hamilton’s Johnthan O’Neal in 17 seconds, before outlasting Roland-Story’s Logan Powers with a 6-3 victory.

Freshman Jaron Jacobs (19-9, 106 lbs.) finished second, alongside Harmeyer (14-7, 126 lbs.). Jacobs won his semifinal match through a 12-2 decision, but came up short against Nevada’s Urijah Courter, while Harmeyer defeated two opponents before falling to Perry’s Townes Wilson in the championship match.

Conner (138 lbs., 20-15), Turner (24-12, 150 lbs.), Miller (21-11, 175 lbs.) and Ball (17-16, 215 lbs.) each landed third in their respective weight classes, while Winters (16-5, 113 lbs.), Angell (5-2, 132 lbs.) and Binkley (18-8, 144 lbs.) each settled fourth in their subdivisions.
