Rams fall short in triangular, take fifth place at Ogden Dual Tournament

This past week, the Greene County High School wrestling team went into dual mode. On docket – dual wise – was a challenging mix of Heart of Iowa Activities Conference teams, area competition and teams from other parts of the state.

After dropping to No. 9 (Class 2A, IAWrestle) Roland-Story and West Marshall last Thursday in State Center, the Rams went 3-2 and landed fifth at the Ogden Dual Tournament held this past Saturday at the Ogden High School Gym. 

The red and black grapplers edged Woodward-Granger (38-36), defeated East Sac County (57-24), fell to Regina Catholic of Iowa City (53-27), came up short against No. 8-ranked Algona (71-12) and salvaged their day by slipping past Ogden (35-33).

So far, the Rams shifted to a 5-5 overall record with a 0-2 mark within the HOIAC.

At 6 p.m. tonight at the Greene County Gym in Jefferson, the Rams will square off with Saydel in a HOIAC dual. This weekend, the Rams will make a short trek west to take part in the Carroll Invitational, scheduled for 10 a.m. at The Tiger Gym on the campus of Carroll High School.

Against the Norsemen and Trojans, the Rams were led by junior Brent Dennhardt (165 lbs.), junior Jacob Harmeyer (126 lbs.) and freshman Jaron Jacobs (106 lbs.). All three wrestlers won both of their allotted matches.

Freshmen Brennan Jacobs (113 lbs.), junior Crew Connor (144 lbs.), senior Zeke Binkley (150 lbs.) and freshman Degan Miller (175 lbs.) each went 1-1 over the course of the evening.

Dennhardt then dominated in Saturday’s dual matches, going to a perfect 5-0. Due to this favorable stretch, the sixth-ranked wrestler in Class 2A improved to 15-1 overall.

Senior Gavin Scheuermann (11-2) picked up two wins and another via forfeit, and teammate Jackson Turner (10-7) went 3-1 in matches with another win coming from a forfeit. Brennan Jacobs also went 3-1 in his matches, alongside a forfeit victory.

Conner went 3-2 in his matchups, while Jaron Jacobs was 1-1 in his bouts – along with capturing three forfeit victories for the Rams. Miller also went 3-2, and Binkley won his lone match of the day. 

Junior Marcus Ball finished 3-3 on the day for Greene County, and freshman Roman Sebourn wrestled in all five duals in Ogden.
