Rams face tough competition at Nodaway Valley, Rollin Dyer Invitational

By TYLER ANDERSON tanderson@iowainformation.com

As a new year dawned upon the Greene County High School wrestling team, the Rams were in for a pair of solid challenges to ignite their goal of sending as many grapplers to the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling Championships, slated for mid-February at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The red and black wrestlers started 2024 with a quadrangular, held on Jan. 2 at the Competition Gym on the campus of Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield, where they faced Lenox, the hosting Wolverines and Martensdale-St. Marys

There, the Rams went 1-2. Greene County started well enough with a 57-15 win over Lenox, but fell short against the Blue Devils in a 40-33 decision. In the nightcap, the Rams lost to the Wolverines, 48-31.

Greene County moved to a 7-7 record in duals so far this season.

The second challenge was the Rollin Dyer Invitational, which took place last Saturday at Atlantic High School. There, the red and black went up against opponents from all across Iowa and even a couple of highly competitive programs based in Nebraska.

When the dust settled on a full day of wrestling, the Rams settled for 12th in the team standings – paced by a fourth place finish from junior Brent Dennhardt, and fifth place showings from senior Jackson Turner and freshman Degan Miller. Junior Gavyn Winters also found a spot on the medal stand, finishing sixth in the 113 lbs. weight class.

Bondurant-Farrar topped the field with 214 points, followed by Skutt Catholic of Omaha (212.5), Sergeant Bluff-Luton (169.5), Blair, Nebraska (144), and Humboldt (134.5).

At 6 p.m. tonight, the Rams will collide with Heart of Iowa Activities Conference foes PCM and South Hamilton in duals action, which will take place at the South Hamilton High School Gym in Jewell. At 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, the red and black will compete at the Perry Invitational, which will take place at the Perry High School Gym.

Next Tuesday, the Rams return home for a quadrangular – bringing Coon Rapids-Bayard, Nevada and Perry into the Greene County Gym in Jefferson.

Results from the busy stretch will be posted in an upcoming edition of the Jefferson Herald.

Against the Lenox Tigers, a plethora of Rams scored victories on the mat. This number included Winters (113 lbs. and 120 lbs.), senior Zeke Binkley (144 lbs.), Turner (150 lbs.), senior Gavin Scheuermann (157 lbs.) and junior Marcus Ball (215 lbs.). Freshman Jaron Jacobs (106 lbs.), teammate Brennan Jacobs (113 lbs.), junior Jacob Harmeyer (126 lbs.), freshman Roman Sebourn (132 lbs.) and Dennhardt (165 lbs.) won through forfeit.

Jaron Jacobs, junior Crew Conner, Binkley, Scheuermann, Dennhardt and sophomore Colton Crouse (215 lbs.) each picked up wins on the mat against the Blue Devils.

In the final dual of the evening against Nodaway Valley, the Rams were led by Winters, Conner, Turner, Scheuermann and Dennhardt, who scored victories for the Rams. Jaron Jacobs was the lone Greene County grappler who claimed a forfeit victory.

Two days later in Atlantic, Dennhardt (24-3) advanced to the semifinals of the 165 lbs. bracket, before shifting over to the wrestlebacks. Dennhardt battled to the third place match, where he came up short against Underwood’s Maddox Nelson in a narrow 7-5 decision.

Turner (18-11) made it to the quarterfinals before moving over to the consolation side of the 150 lbs. weight class. Turner battled in the third round of consolations and won his fifth place match over Red Oak’s Jaxon Terry with a 1:26 pinfall.

Miller (15-10) followed a similar path, advancing to the quarterfinals until having to move over to the backside of the 175 lbs. bracket. Miller then advanced to the third round, but had to settle for the fifth place match. There, Miller defeated Bondurant-Farrar’s Chase Rial with a 4-0 decision.

Winters made it to the semifinals, before having to settle for sixth place in the 113 lbs. weight class. This was due to leaving the tournament due to medical forfeit.

Jaron Jacobs (18-8), Conner (15-14), Binkley (7-5) and Ball (11-14) also competed at the Rollin Dyer Invitational.
