Greene County’s varsity volleyball team started their season with a 3-1 conference win over CMB on September 9. The Rams have been practicing for almost a month, so it was time to have some competition, and see someone besides a team mate on the other side of the net. The Raiders came into the match with a 1-1 record after losing to Lynnville Sully and picking up a conference win over Saydel.

The squad looked very sharp in their opening game. After going up 4-3 early in the match, Greene County never gave up the lead and finished with an 8-0 run to win 25-13. CMB came out determined in the second game and took advantage of several Ram errors to win 25-22. Greene County started game three with a 5-0 run and dominated the Raiders throughout, but had a little more difficulty in game four when the visitors led by as much as seven points before Greene County came back to tie it up 17-17. The Raiders did not go down easily, but the Rams finally took the fourth game 25-23 to win the match.

“We were so anxious for our first match to get here, and we looked impressive in the first game,” said coach Donna Carhill. “We slumped badly in the second and scored a lot of CMB’s points on errors. We recovered in the third and pulled from behind in the last game to finish the match. I was quite happy with our blocking, and I thought we served tough. We need to work on improving our passing. When we pass well and set up our offense, we are more successful.”

The Rams will need to be at their best on Thursday (today) when Nevada comes to town. The Cubs were ranked sixth in the Class 3A Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s volleyball rankings that were released on September 4.
