Greene County’s boys track team had a strong showing at the Kip Janvrin Invitational in Panora on April 7 by winning four events and having 16 other second through sixth place finishes. The squad amassed 127 points over the course of the evening finishing second to Panorama who won the meet with 171 points. Other teams participating and their point totals were Ogden 120, Woodward-Granger 100, Glidden-Ralston 21, Guthrie Center 12, and Iowa Christian Academy 5.

“The nice weather conditions after the rain passed helped us tremendously,” said coach Dean Lansman. “Since we only had one meet that was not cancelled last week, we pushed the kids hard in practice, and I was very happy with our performances across the board.”

Ram senior Roman Phillips had an exceptional evening. His :10.99 time in 100 meter dash broke the existing meet record as did his :22.82 performance in the 200 meter dash. Phillips also anchored Greene County’s victorious 4 x 100 meter and 4 x 200 meter relays. Other members of those relay teams were Dylan Hamilton, JC Weitl, and Max Neese. “Roman set goals for what he wanted to accomplish his senior year and built up his strength during the offseason,” said coach Dean Lansman. “I don’t think he was that interested in track when he was younger, but he has worked extremely hard. He will be facing some tough competition in the next couple of weeks, and he is anxious to see how he does against them.”

Since the boys don’t have another meet until April 15, Lansman stated that the coaches will work the kids hard this week. He anticipates entering both a varsity and junior varsity squad in the Warrior Relays at Gowrie next Monday, so many will get a chance to participate.
