Phillips breaks 1985 school 100 meter dash record

Senior Roman Phillips may remember the 2014 Ram Relays for a long time. On April 21, Phillips broke a 29 year old school record in the 100 meter dash, set a new meet record in the 200 meter dash, and anchored the Ram’s winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams. The previous record holder in the 100 meter dash was Ram speedster Todd Cleverly who was a state champion in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes in 1985. His 100 meter time of 10.8 appeared to be better than Phillips’, but Cleverly’s time was clocked using a hand held timing device. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, converting the time to a fully automatic time, requires one to add .24 to the hand held time. Making the conversion, changed Cleverly’s time to :11.04, and allowed Phillips to take over as the new 100 meter record holder with his time of :10.94. Five other Greene County place winners also set new personal records during the April 21 meet. Dylan McConnell lowered his time in the 110 meter high hurdles (:16.28), Daric Whipple ran his fastest time in the 400 meter hurdles (:59.41), Max Neese recorded a :23.25 time in the 200 meter dash, Mitchell Gorsuch had his best leap in the long jump (19’ 3.5”), and Alex Rasmussen threw 5.5 inches further in the shot put (47’ 5.5”).

Altogether, the team had 21 events score points by finishing in the top six. “We had some good relays tonight, and Roman ran really well,” said coach Dean Lansman. “The distance races weren’t very easy with the 15-20 mile per hour winds on the backstretch. We’re getting better, and that continues to be our goal as the season progresses. The weather is starting to warm up, and I think that will help our running events.”

Despite having a superb night, the Carroll boys won the meet by scoring 139.5 points. The Rams accumulated 116 points just slipping by Boone who had 115.5. Other scores were Perry 65, East Sac County 57, Prairie Valley 37, Kuemper Catholic 26, Greene County junior varsity 8, and Guthrie Center 4.

On April 17, the Rams won the large class of the Saydel Invitiational by scoring 145 points and winning over the following other teams: North Polk 104, Roland-Story 98, Saydel 91, Ballard 78, and Nevada 54. Greene County’s performances in field events appeared to have contributed significantly to winning the title. Alex Rasmussen and Isaac Perez finished first and second in both the shot put and discus competitions, and Mitchell Gorsuch won the long jump event. Chris Mannion and J.C Weitl also scored points in the field events. The Rams also won three running events, and had 10 other second through sixth place finishers in the events run on the track. “One of our team goals at the beginning of the season was to win more meets,” said Lansman. “It was nice to see the kids come out on top tonight.”
