Paton-Churdan’s young volleyball team lost to Iowa Christian Academy 23-25, 15-25, 12-25 in their opening match of the season on September 2. The Rockets had four freshman starters, who were playing in their first varsity match, while the Wolfpack had four seniors and two juniors on the floor when the first whistle blew. The first game was a seesaw battle. After the Rockets started out with a 4-0 lead, neither team had more than a two point lead at any time. Iowa Christian started hitting with more power in the next two games and started attacking with more balls that landed close to the lines. The Rockets had difficulty receiving those hard hit balls and deciding which ones were in bounds. They also averaged four service errors per game, but serving difficulties are often common in matches early in the season.

Rolling Valley all conference player Sydney Koch showed leadership on the court throughout the night and led the home team with nine kills. Mariah Tasler had four ace serves and six assists in the game, and Maria Tasler had some impressive back row plays

“Overall the team played aggressively in each game, and I think the girls were pleased with some of the plays that they were able to make,” said coach Boehmer. “The team is improving, and I think they will be ready to work hard in practice after having a match.”

The Paton-Churdan squad will participate in the Coon Rapids-Bayard tournament this Saturday.
