As a collective, the Greene County High School boys’ golf team have enjoyed the comforts of home quite often. The Rams have also tested themselves when they ventured into unfamiliar settings.

It also helps when senior Jack Hansen has been playing lights out, as of late.

The red and black golfers rattled off some impressive showings, starting with a fifth place finish in a loaded Des Moines Christian Invitational on April 11 at Jester Park Golf Course in Granger. Greene County then grabbed third place at the inaugural Ram Invitational, held last Saturday at The Hill Golf Course in Grand Junction and the Jefferson Community Golf Course.

This past Monday, the Rams clinched a 160-189 victory over St. Edmond in a duel at the Jefferson Community Golf Course.

“It was a good win, with a great team score,” said Kyle Kinne, GCHS boys’ golf coach.

At 10 a.m. on Friday, the Rams will challenge themselves once more with a trip to northwest Iowa – competing at the Western Christian Invitational, held at The Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center. There, the Rams will compete against Akron-Westfield, Estherville Lincoln Central, MOC-Floyd Valley, Ridge View, Sioux Center, Spencer and the hosting Wolfpack.

On Saturday, Greene County will take part in the Bluejay Invite at the Perry Golf and Country Club. The Rams will take on ADM, Gilbert and host Perry.

This past Monday at Jefferson Community Golf Course, Hansen collected golf with 34 strokes, followed by senior Nathan Behne’s 39 strokes. Freshman Landon Vote recorded 42 strokes, while sophomore Nathan Towers posted 45 strokes.

Sophomore Carter Hinote scored 46 strokes, and senior Gavin Trecker picked up 54 strokes.

The red and black started the Ram Invitational over at The Hill, before finishing up in Jefferson. Greene County tied with Coon Rapids-Bayard with 342 strokes, but ended up third overall due to tiebreaking criteria.

Roland-Story won the team side of the meet with 333 strokes. Grand View Christian, Ogden, South Central Calhoun and Southeast Valley also participate in the meet.

Hansen carded an invite-best 78 strokes, as Behne logged 86 strokes. Wolterman came out with 88 strokes, followed by Towers’ 90 strokes. Sophomore Broc Stream carded 95 strokes and Vote registered 97 strokes.

At the DMC Invite, the Rams settled for fifth with 346 strokes due to tiebreakers. Panorama won the meet with 330 strokes, followed by Treynor’s 331 strokes, PCM had 345 strokes and the hosting Lions took 346 strokes.

Pleasantville, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Coon Rapids-Bayard and Earlham also took part in the invite.

Hansen reeled in 81 strokes, while Behne carded 87 strokes. Towers had 88 strokes, and Stream rounded things out with 90 strokes.

“(Hansen) tied for third, but lost medalist status, due to the card back,” Kinne said. “He golfed well, but had a couple of really bad breaks that caused an out of bounds. It was also super windy. We shot better than last year, even though the weather wasn’t good. It was a stacked group of teams who should all finish either first or second in their conferences.”
