Greene County Joe Carey’s impressive play carried over into postseason play last week. Fresh off a Heart of Iowa Conference individual title, the Rams’ No. 1 rolled through competition at a 3A sectional tournament to earn a spot at the district competition Monday night.
Carey finished third at the sectional tournament in Denison Wednesday, May 11, carding a valiant 18-hole score of 79. He parlayed that showing into an eighth-place finish at the 3A district tournament Monday in Spencer, firing a six-over, 78.
Carey’s impressive run fell just a hair short of the 2022 Class 3A state tournament, as only the top two non-team qualifying individuals made the cut for the next round. Lewis Central’s Jordan Greenwood, who finished runner-up with a three-over 75, and Estherville Lincoln Central’s Ryan Schiltz (third at four-over 76) qualified for the 3A state meet in Ames.
Spencer’s Andrew Hough took down the individual district title, carding a two-over 74. MOC-Floyd Valley’s Davis Korver finished fourth (76) followed by Spencer’s Jimmy Slattery (77), Webster City’s Devon Stoakes (77) and seventh-place Kaden Miller, of Spencer (78).
As a team, Greene County finished fourth at the 3A sectional tournament May 11 in Denison, carding a total score of 350.
Council Bluffs Lewis Central captured the sectional team title with a score of 338, edging out runner-up Carroll (342) and third place Atlantic (344).
Carroll’s Drew Munson took home medalist honors with a 77 while Lewis Central’s Jordan Greenwood was runner-up after carding a 78. Atlantic freshman Tristan Hayes finished fourth with a score of 81.
Greene County’s scoring last week was rounded out by Nathan Behne and Jack Hansen each carding 87s while Max Riley turned in a 97. Caden Telleen came in at 105 followed by Kole Teeples with a 118.
The Class 3A state tournament is set for May 23 and May 24 at Veenker Golf Course in Ames.
