Buena Vista University senior relief pitcher Wes Onken (Jefferson, IA/East Greene) has been recognized for his performances on the mound recently by earning Iowa Conference Pitcher of the Week accolades for the first time in his career. Onken made a pair of outings during BVU’s four-game weekend sweep over Loras College to begin the IIAC schedule. In game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, Onken came on with two outs in the sixth inning and worked the final 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits en route to his fifth save of the year. The following day, Onken was called on again after the Duhawks had cut a 12-4 Beaver lead in the ninth inning down to three, and threw one pitch to earn the save and complete the sweep. This year, Onken has a league-best six saves, as no other IIAC pitcher has more than one. BVU, ranked 20th in the latest ABCA national poll, has now won eight straight games to improve to 13-3 overall (4-0 IIAC).
