Yet another Greene County tradition will commence Saturday afternoon.

The Ram baseball program, under the direction of first-year head coach John Hupp, will host its inaugural Red versus Black scrimmage at 1 p.m. at Allensworth Field.

The Rams welcome the general public for a sneak peek at the new era of Greene County baseball with a scrimmage in full uniform as part of a summer kickoff. The Greene County softball team will also be introduced while the Cattlemen will serve lunch.

Hupp is a 2007 Jefferson-Scranton graduate and was pegged as the new baseball coach, replacing Mark Sawhill, back in March. The initiation of a preseason scrimmage is a way to generate some early attention on the Greene County baseball team, the coach said. He noticed how the high school kicks off the fall, winter, and spring seasons with pep rallies, so why not do the same for the summer sports?

“We want people to be excited about the program,” Hupp said. “We have a lot of different things going on. We are excited for the summer.

It’s something we threw together in the last few weeks but we want to become more.”

In addition to the action on the baseball diamond, there will be various kids games between innings.

A free-will donation from crowd members will be donated to the Cattleman following the afternoon contest.

The Rams open the 2018 regular season with a road game May 24 at rival Perry. The home-opener is set for May 29 against Coon Rapids-Bayard.
