Eager for quality time at Panorama
We’re just a few short weeks away from the beginning of boating season on Lake Panorama. My wife, Chris, and I are looking forward to sharing more memories with our children at Lake Panorama.
Like many Iowa families, we enjoy summer when we’re able to spend time together while the grandkids are out of school for summer break.
In recent years, Iowans increasingly approached me voicing their concern about Iowa schools starting earlier and earlier, sometimes in the beginning of August.
Iowans told me repeatedly that this prevented them from enjoying their full summer together. Due to these concerns, I instructed the Iowa Department of Education to follow the law regarding Iowa school start date, which stated that Iowa schools are not to start before the week that includes the first of September.
I’m pleased to report that after working with the Iowa Legislature, I signed a compromise bill into law that states that Iowa schools will start no earlier than Aug. 23rd. This bill, which passed the Iowa House 71-29 and the Iowa Senate 28-22, will give families across Iowa predictability regarding the school start date.
With certainty surrounding Iowa’s school start date now in place, Iowa families will have time together to vacation, Iowans will have a greater opportunity to visit our lakes, museums, trails and parks, 4-H and FFA students will be free to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair and local school districts will be able to start in early enough to finish exams before the winter holidays.
It’s my hope that the resolution surrounding the school start date issue will be indicative of our ability to work together for another successful legislative session.
There is still much more to do, but I am encouraged that issues like our anti-bullying initiative and our “Connect Every Acre” broadband plan will also be approved.
