Susan Holz

Susan Holz passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023 at a hospice care facility in Gretna, NE. She succumbed to benign brain tumors that kept recurring since 2012. She endured 4 brain surgeries and a bout of radiation, but they kept coming back and she decided to end her battle and stop fighting them in early 2022. She lasted 21 months.

She was 68. Sue, or Susie as some affectionately called her, was born on April 20, 1955 to Lewie and Joyce Laub of Grand Junction, Iowa. She was raised there, attending East Greene K-12, graduating in 1973. She then attended Iowa State University earning a Bachelors in Interior Design in 1976, a semester early.  She was married that same year to Mark Holz, and recently reached their 47th anniversary.  Mark and Sue came to Colorado in 1978 with Mark’s then job at Hach Company, first living in Fort Collins, and later moving to Aurora, CO.  Sue spent most of her career with Charles Schwab, when her diagnosis forced her to retire in 2020 with 29 years of service.

Sue is survived by her husband, Mark Holz; daughters, Sarah Goldsmith (Ben) and Kathy Carroll (Aaron); mother, Joyce Laub; brother, Mitch Laub; and grandkids Emma, Carter, Jackson, and Jonah.  She is preceded in death by her father Lewis Laub.

Sue is most remembered for her love of gardening and her talent in arts and crafts. She was always working on something, whether it be refinishing a door or rocking chair, remodeling a room, making her own you-name-it, whipping up something in the kitchen.  Sue also enjoyed the Colorado mountains and loved going to see the aspens changing in the fall. When she did take time to relax, she was usually multi-tasking!

Sewing while watching TV, working on a scrapbook, or dozing off during a movie.  So when we say RIP Sue, we truly mean: may you rest in peace, mom.

Celebration of Life for Susan will be 11:00 AM Saturday, October 21, 2023 at First United Methodist Church of Jefferson, IA. with Visitation starting at 10:30 AM.

Please plant a flower in remembrance of Sue. Gladiolus or Iris were a favorite, of course any flower will do.
