Roland Snowgren

Roland Snowgren, 89, of Rippey died Sunday, March 11, 2018. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Interment was at Franklin Township Cemetery in Greene County, Iowa. Visitation with the family was from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 14 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home.  

Roland Herbert Snowgren was born February 28, 1929, to Roy Snowgren and Elsie (Paulsen) Snowgren in Boone County, Iowa.

Roland was raised in the Jamaica, Iowa area. He graduated from Cooper, Iowa in 1948 and enlisted in the United States Navy in the same year. He was honorably discharged in 1954. During his service he was stationed on the U.S.S. Essex aircraft carrier. Roland relished his service to the country and frequently reminisced about his experiences.

Upon return from service, Roland was united in marriage to Donna John in August of 1954. They became parents to Dennis, Dwight and Connie. They lived many happy years on the farm north of Jamaica before their marriage ended.

Roland later married Ruthann Cosner and together they had one son, Gary Snowgren. Following their separation Roland and Bobbie Millard married and lived many happy years together before her death in January 2000.

Roland farmed much of his life north of Jamaica, raising dairy cows and hogs early on along with corn and soybeans throughout his career.

Roland was a member of The American Legion.  He enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and playing cards in his early years. He also enjoyed traveling and gambling. Roland loved cooking, gardening, preserving, watching westerns and spending time with family.

Roland is preceded in death by his sons, Gary Snowgren and Dwight Snowgren; his parents, Roy and Elsie Snowgren; step-brother, Eddie Davis; and step-father, Ormea Davis.

He is survived by his friend and companion, Dorothy Groves of Rippey; son, Dennis (Ann) Snowgren of Perry; daughter, Connie (Vivian) of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Marsha Snowgren of Jamaica; sister, Betty Farley of Atlantic; step-sons, Joe Mallard (Mary) of Rippey and Kenny (Melinda) Mallard of Jefferson; grandchildren: Jake Snowgren of Perry, Brad Snowgren of Perry, Ben (Amber) Snowgren of Grimes, Heather (John) Erickson of Perry, Adam (Rachel) Snowgren of Paton, Stacy (Joe) Tolle of Dexter and Brent Woods of Madrid; many great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many more relatives and friends.
