Richard Timmerman

Richard Timmerman, 79, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 from heart disease. Services have been held and he was laid to rest at Merle Hay Funeral Home Mausoleum in Des Moines.

Richard Lee Timmerman was born on October 28, 1937 in Lake City, Iowa. He graduated college from his beloved Iowa State University in 1961 with a degree in industrial engineering, and then married his longtime love, Judy George the same year. He later received a master’s degree in business, also from Iowa State.

Richard served as lieutenant in the U.S. Army at Ft. Hood, Texas for two years. After his service, the family moved back to Iowa. His successful career included jobs at various manufacturing companies, working in local and state government and running his own business. He was named a President of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers. When he lived in Jefferson, he was instrumental in creating the annual Jefferson Bell Tower Festival and was both President and Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1982, he was awarded the town’s ABC award for service to the Jefferson Community, going above and beyond the call of duty. Richard was appointed by Governor Ray to the Environmental Quality Commission. Later, he proudly worked under Governor Branstad as the Director of Economic Development for the state of Iowa.

Richard had a deep love for his family, the Catholic Church, the state of Iowa, golf, baseball and politics. One of the thrills of his life was to see his Chicago Cubs win the World Series shortly before his passing. Richard loved talking with others and inquiring about their lives. He had a big heart and a great sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Judy George Timmerman; his four children; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National CMV Foundation, in honor of his great-granddaughter. Online condolences may be expressed at www.iowafuneralplanning.com.
