Mildred Skalla

Mildred L. Skalla, 85, of Scranton, passed peacefully home July 15.

A memorial service was held July 27 at Gospel Open Bible Church in Jefferson.

Mildred was born in Jefferson on Dec. 26, 1933, the daughter of Eleanor (Fischer) and Harold Phelps.

After she graduated from Jefferson High School, she became a farm wife when she married Junior Skalla, of Scranton, on June 2, 1952. They shared 50 years together, raising six children. Mildred enjoyed her home and hard-working life on the farm for 67 years.

Mildred was involved in church, community and social events, but her priority was always “family first.” Her large family and friends will remember her ability to make them smile, her love of cooking, and her kind and caring spirit. Mildred’s friends were all so very dear and supporting to her, which she greatly appreciated.

Left to carry her memory are her six children: Michael Skalla, of Bettendorf; Teresa Jones, of Ackworth; Rose Mary (Mark) Thompson, of Ames; Karen (Mark) Caraher, of Glidden; Daniel (Lynn) Skalla, of East Moline, Ill.; and Dennis Skalla, of Pueblo, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one brother; four sisters; one sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were husband Junior and son-in-law Fred Jones.

Mildred was so anxious to go home to Jesus and see passed loved ones. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

Editor’s note: Mrs. Skalla’s obituary was mistakenly omitted from the July 25 Herald. We sincerely apologize for the mistake.
