Loraine Marks

Loraine Doris Marks, daughter of Marshall Nay Derry and Mary Bell Derry was born July 1, 1918 south of Jefferson, Iowa and died March 2, 2018 at her daughter’s home in North Augusta, South Carolina. Loraine was 99, years, 8 months and 1 day.  

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2018 at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson. Dennis Ross, church and family friend offered words of comfort. Casket bears were Randy Marks, Jim Marks, Danny Marks. Sparky Sparks, Scott McAleerand and Kyle McAleer. Special recorded music as well as solos were sung by her grandchildren, Danny Marks and Teresa Marks. After the interment at the Jefferson Cemetery, lunch and a time for fellowship was provided by the ladies of the Gospel Open Bible Church.  

Loraine was born into a large family and lived on a farm in Greenbrier Township. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then attended Cooper High School. Loraine was united in marriage with James Marks on October 13 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She became a busy mother of nine children and an active Pastor’s wife.

Loraine was always at James’ side for church and related activities, many times lending her beautiful voice to the service. She said that church and family were her greatest joys. Loraine read her Bible every morning before breakfast.  

Fishing was a great getaway for her and she also enjoyed crossword puzzles. She had worked as a nurse’s aide at the Jefferson Hospital and everyone is sure her patients appreciated her wonderful smile and Godly care. Loraine was a faithful member of the Church of God since 1940. She lived at Adams Court in Jefferson for 26 years before moving to Mary’s home for several years. She then moved to be with her daughter, Shirley and later moved to be with daughter, Sharon.

Loraine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Marks; son, Richard Marks; sisters: May Derry, Madeline Ganoe and Lucille Kendall; and brothers: Roscoe, Clifford, Walter and Everett Derry. Loraine will be lovingly remembered by her children: John Marks (Kay) of Palestine, Texas; Jim Moore (Debbie) of Moore, Oklahoma; Randy Marks of Springfield, Oregon; Shirley Sparks of Branson, Missouri; Mary Anderson (Don) of Jefferson, Iowa; Jean Wyman of Palm Desert, California; Joan Hadden of San Bernardino, California; and Sharon Henrichsen (Charles) of North Augusta of South Carolina; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends
