LeRoy Calvert

Elmer “LeRoy” Calvert, 80, of rural Paton, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa on Saturday, April 6, 2024. LeRoy was born in Guthrie County, Iowa on March 4, 1944, the son of Elmer Isaac Calvert and Martha June Brittian Calvert. He graduated from Bayard High School and proudly served in the Iowa National Guard for six years, where he was a Marksman (Carbine) and Expert (Rifle). On December 29, 1978, he was united in marriage to Tamara Lou McCollom, the love of his life. They shared a love of horses and dogs, and owned many through the years. LeRoy’s favorite horse, Fancy, preceded him in death and he is undoubtedly saddled up and riding in heaven with Tammy and her favorite horse, Strut. LeRoy spent many years as a full-time farrier before starting a career as a mechanic at the Fareway truck shop in Boone. LeRoy continued working as a farrier part-time and had clients all over Iowa. He loved his work as a horseshoer and would often say he trimmed hooves in his sleep every night. LeRoy was also one of the founders of the Iowa Farriers Association and was the treasurer of that organization for over 25 years. LeRoy enjoyed horseback riding & driving, attending farrier clinics, and participating in historical reenactments with Tammy at Frontier Days at the Fort Museum in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He also enjoyed a good hitch and trained all of his horses to pull a buggy or wagon. LeRoy was a kind, quiet, & private man. He was a good, faithful Christian and the kind of person we should all strive to become. He was also stubborn as a mule (which he loved to ride) and once he made up his mind, that was the end of the discussion. LeRoy was preceded in death by his beloved wife Tammy, his parents, Isaac & Martha Calvert, his grandparents, Floyd & Margaret Calvert and Louis & Lucy Brittian, and infant brother Jerry Lee Calvert. He is survived by his deeply loved sister, Sandra Hanson, his brothers Jerry Dean Calvert & Kelly Calvert, several nieces & nephews, as well as many dear friends he considered family. Services will be held at Central Christian Church on Friday, April 12, 2024. Visitation will be at 10:00am followed by his funeral service at 11:00am. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery next to Tammy. Lunch will be held at the church after the burial. Final arrangements are being coordinated by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson, Iowa. Memorials can be made to Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa for use in the pediatrics unit for the benefit of Cystic Fibrosis patients; Central Christian Church in Jefferson; or to the LeRoy Calvert Estate.
