Kathi Patterson

Kathi Patterson, 70, of Marshall, N.C., passed away on Dec. 9.  She was a loving and kind soul whose main goal in life was to help and heal others.

She was born in Waterloo in 1950 to Audrey Jean and William Patterson, grew up in Jefferson, and became the oldest of seven brothers and sisters.

Kathi attended Lincoln High School in Des Moines and later graduated with honors from the University of Iowa’s comparative literature and cinema studies programs. She continued her scholarly pursuits when she moved to New York City in the early 1980s, where she also worked in the film industry as a festival organizer.

It was at a film conference where she met her future husband, Eric Monder. She taught English and media studies in several New York schools before she and Eric moved to Kansas, where she continued teaching while also working on two house renovation projects and became a field representative for the Census Bureau.

Finally, she and Eric moved to North Carolina to take care of Eric’s parents. Her last position was as a Census Bureau supervisor. When that work ended, she began writing a book about one of her favorite topics, the lost world of Atlantis. She was also proud to be an ordained minister at the Universal Life Ministries.

Kathi was very close to her late grandparents, Pat and Golda Patterson. Her parents, stepparents and beloved sister, Chris, all predeceased her.

Kathi is survived by her husband, Eric; sisters Carol and Beth; brothers John, Mike and Roy; stepbrothers Don and Jack; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and friends from all over the world. She loved them all and will be greatly missed.

Graveside services were held on Dec. 24 at Lewis Memorial Park, Asheville, N.C.
