Judy Hyatt

Judith Colleen Hyatt, 76, of Clive, Iowa died on June 3, 2017 from ovarian cancer at Wesley Acres Health Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Judy was born in Iowa City, Iowa on December 15, 1940 to Harold and Naomi (Blanshan) Harper of Jefferson, Iowa. She was raised in Jefferson and had many close friends. She graduated in 1959 from Jefferson High School. After high school, she worked for a brief time before being accepted to the University of Iowa. While attending school, she met the love of her life, Roger W. Hyatt, Jr.  After dating for two years they were married in 1963. After graduation they moved to Laurel, Md. where Roger had a job waiting. One year later they moved to Bowie, Md. where they remained for the next 30 years. The marriage produced two biological daughters, Lisa and Valerie, and an adopted son, James. Roger and Judy were happily married for almost 54 years.  

Judy ran her own in-home day care business until she was hired by the National Security Agency, where she worked for over 10 years.

Judy gave her heart to all those she encountered. From being a second mother to her children’s friends to leading Campfire Girl groups to volunteering at a suicide hotline to being a United Methodist Youth Fellowship counselor, Judy generously shared her soul. With a wicked sense of humor, Judy could put anyone at ease with laughter. Anyone who met her was struck with how warm and welcomed they felt. As a lifelong sports fan, she loved the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins.

Judy is survived by husband, Roger; sister, Kay Crose; children: Lisa, Valerie and James along with six grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Naomi along with brothers, Dean and Russell.  

A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24, 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church with lunch afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grace United Methodist Church and/or the Cancer Research Institute.
