Gloria Joyce Macek, the daughter of James and Doris (Waldo) Averill, was born on Sept. 15, 1937, in Jefferson. Joyce graduated from Jefferson High School in 1955.
On June 2, 1957, Joyce was united in marriage to Ronald Gene Macek in Fort Dodge.
Joyce enjoyed a successful retail career spanning 24 years starting as manager, then a group manager, and culminating to being the first female district manager for Salkin and Linoff, a retail clothing firm.
Joyce mentored many young women by working with the fashion merchandising programs at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, where she was president of the program. She also served as president of the Crossroads Mall Association in Fort Dodge for two consecutive terms.
After retiring from Salkin and Linoff, Joyce continued her retail dream of owning her own store by opening Carousel and Company, a children’s clothing store.
Joyce was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. She was an adventurous person and showed it by taking flying lessons and even soloing. She was an avid fisherwoman and was known to always have a rod and reel with her when traveling on her job.
Joyce loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and she always kept up with their school and sports activities with pride.
Joyce is survived by her children: Steven (Betsy) Macek, of Goffstown, N.H.; and Stacy (Kent) Barber, of Algona; grandchildren: Brandon Macek, of Manchester, N.H.; Justin Macek, of Vista, Calif.; Ian Barber, of Iowa City; and her very special granddaughter, Connor Barber, of Atlanta; sister Toni (Phillip) Roberts, of Rippey; sisters-in-law Veronica Averill, of Fort Dodge, and Marylee Michel, of Boone, and brother-in-law Robert Macek, of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ronald; a brother, James Averill; and many Macek brother- and sister-in-laws.
