Gary Lyons

Gary Dean Lyons was born June 18, 1939 in Perry, Iowa, the son of George D. and Ethel Elvira (Willis) Lyons. He grew up in the Dawson and Perry area and graduated from Dawson High School in 1957. Gary passed away Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Rowley Masonic Home in Perry, at the age of 77.

Gig, as he was usually called by most that knew him, was always up to shenanigans of some sort. He knew everyone and everyone seemed to know him. He had stories to tell and many had stories to tell on him. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and was known to yell at the TV if a play or call by the referee wasn’t what he thought it should be. Gig was an outdoors man his whole life. He loved to fish and hunt with his beloved black lab. He relished deer hunting season with his son and grandson. He taught them the valuable safety rules of hunting.

Gary was involved in law enforcement in Wyoming, Chief of Police in Grand Junction, Iowa and a Deputy Sheriff in Dallas County, Iowa. He believed everyone deserved a second chance, but not always a third chance.

Survivors include his sons, Dean (Lora) Lyons of Grand Junction and Mike Lyons of Des Moines; daughters, Lisa (David) Jorgenson of Webster City, Iowa and Amber Springer of Des Moines; one brother, Larry Lyons of Perry; one sister, Lana Coatney of Atlantic, Iowa; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Preceding Gary in death were his parents.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. Cards may be sent to Murdock Funeral Home, 1420 Warford St., Perry, IA 50220. Online condolences may be sent to murdockfuneralhome.net.
