Eugene Louis Subbert
Eugene “Gene” Louis Subbert, age 96, of Scranton, IA, passed away peacefully at his home in Scranton on Monday, September 18, 2023 surrounded by his family.
Funeral service will be held at 2 P.M. on Friday, September 22, 2023 at the United Methodist Church in Scranton with Rev. Bobbi Maltas officiating. Organist for the service will be Karen Murphy. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Dedham American Legion.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday. Additional visitation will be held at the Scranton United Methodist Church from 1 – 2 P.M. on Friday prior to the service.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton and online condolences may be left for the family. The family requests casual attire at Gene’s services with plier holsters allowed!
Gene, as he was known to most, was born on April 3, 1927 in Carroll, IA. He was the son of August “Gus” H. and Frieda K. Rohrbeck Subbert. He lived on farms near Lidderdale, Churdan, and Scranton. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Willow Township. He attended country school at Willow #1 grades 6-8. As a boy he helped his parents at the Subbert Ice Cream Shop in Scranton and on the family farm. He also worked for Pound Gravel Company and the Scranton Co-op elevator until entering the United States Navy in 1949. He completed basic training in San Diego and then was stationed in Hawaii, Guam, and Japan on the USS Kermit Roosevelt (repair ship) as metalsmith during the Korean Conflict. Gene was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned home to Scranton and continued working for the Scranton Co-op for 38 ½ years.
Gene met Ethel Godbersen at a wedding in 1965, and they were married on June 24, 1967 at the Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. The couple made their home in Scranton where they raised their two children Sheila and Lonn. Over the years, Gene also worked for Hawn Farms (Everett, Bill, and Doug) until he was 80 years old, Garst and Thomas as a machine operator in detasseling fields, and part time at Walker Machine Shop in Scranton. Gene enjoyed owning several convertibles, collecting International/Case toy tractors, and following Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. Gene proudly went on the Iowa Honor Flight on September 12, 2016 representing Korean War Veterans.
Gene is survived by his wife Ethel of 56 years of Scranton; daughter Sheila Subbert of Exira; son Lonn Subbert (Lori) of Milford; a sister-in-law Renae Godbersen of Waukee; a brother-in-law Jim Godbersen of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents August “Gus” and Frieda Subbert; his father and mother-in-law Harry and Genevieve Godbersen; three sisters: Sally Becker (Glen), Bea Beyerink (Jays), and Betty in infancy; five brothers: Norman (Marge), Donald (Peg), Leland (Jeannine), Lyle, Robert, and Paul in infancy.
