Donald Garnett

Donald Dean Garnett, 81, of Plattsmouth, Neb. entered into eternal life on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Josie Harper Hospice House in Omaha, Neb.     

Don and his twin sister, Doris Jean, were born to Milferd Elmer and Vera Marie (Hartwigsen) Garnett in the family farmhouse near Scranton, Iowa on July 25, 1936, “the hottest day of the century.”  As a boy, Don worked on the farm with his brother and six sisters, and helped his father haul cattle to the Omaha stockyard. He attended Scranton High School where he was active in football and 4-H, graduating in 1954. He graduated from Omaha University in 1963, where he was a member of the football team, and in 1970 he earned an MBA from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

He met the love of his life, Helen Agnese Bock, at a dance in Carroll, Iowa. They married August 29, 1959 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in her hometown of Templeton, Iowa. Their union was blessed with the birth of three sons and a daughter.  

Don was the first manager of Nebraska Savings & Loan, Westroads Branch in Omaha. He and Helen moved to Plattsmouth in 1981, where he was president of Plattsmouth Savings and Loan. Don   served his community as president of Plattsmouth Rotary Club and president of Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce, and was named King Korn Karnival Lord of the Realm.  Don was an active member of Church of the Holy Spirit and the Knights of Columbus Father Shine Council #1966 both in Plattsmouth, where he volunteered as an acolyte, usher, and he kept a weekly holy hour. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports on TV with his grandchildren, playing golf and joining friends often for lunch and coffee.

Don will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 58 years, Helen Garnett of Plattsmouth; sons: Jeff Garnett of Braselton, Ga., Dan (Kathryn) and grandson, Wesley Garnett of Cumming, Ga. and Jim (Heidi) and grandsons, Ethan and Colby Garnett and Drew Wasmund of Wilsonville, Ore.; daughter, Kristina (John) Pakiz and grandsons, John Paul, Patrick and Michael Pakiz of Blair, Neb.; brother, Carl Garnett of Scranton; sisters, Gladys Hoffman of Clinton, Iowa and Lucille (Scott) Cadwell of Adel, Iowa; twin sister, Doris (Vincent) Kennedy of Jefferson; sisters, Darlene Taggart and Harriett (Byron) Paup both of Scranton; numerous nephews and nieces; in-laws; and many friends from Church of the Holy Spirit Parish.  

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Milferd and Vera Garnett; sister, Virginia (John) Vernon; brothers-in-law, Leonard Hoffman and Gene Taggart; and sister-in-law, Deloris Garnett.  

Rosary Service were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2018 followed by visitations at Church of the Holy Spirit in Plattsmouth.

Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 30 at Church of the Holy Spirit with Father Michael Houlihan officiating, Jim Ulrich and Ron Reinke as acolytes, Terry Little as vocalist and Laurie Hajek-Jones as organist. The pallbearers were Jeff Garnett, Dan Garnett, Jim Garnett, John Pakiz, Roger Schuette and Richard Wassinger. His final resting place will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Plattsmouth.
