Daryl McComb

Daryl A. McComb died at his home in Seattle, Washington, on January 25, 2015. Daryl was born August 15, 1925, in Grand Junction, Iowa, to Andy and Mae (Winchell) McComb. In 1943, at the age of seventeen, he left high school early to enlist in the Navy and joined his brother Francis in the South Pacific. He served as an aircraft mechanic at Guadalcanal and Mactan Island in the Philippines. He liked to say the best birthday present he ever received was the surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945.

Upon returning from the war he made his home in Des Moines, Iowa, until moving to
Seattle in 1950 to start work at Boeing as a machinist. He also learned to fly. He met Lois Scott after moving to Seattle and they were married in 1957, making their home in West Seattle. In 1964, while flying near Williams Lake in central British Columbia, Daryl was forced to land on a small runway in the middle of the wilderness due to bad weather. There he learned that a fishing camp at that location was up for sale. After much thought, Daryl and Lois made the decision to buy the camp. For the next 40 years they owned and operated Eleven Sisters Fishing Camp, making their home on Scum Lake, British Columbia, and spending winters at their home in West Seattle. It was an adventurous life for the both of them and they made many life-long friends with their customers.

In 2003 they sold the camp and returned to Seattle to live full-time. That same year Daryl was awarded an honorary high school diploma from Highline High School in Burien, Washington, making up for the one he missed when he joined the Navy 60 years before. He was very proud of that diploma and his service in the Navy.

Daryl is survived by his wife Lois, his sisters Doris Stewart of Boone, Iowa, and Marion  Hocke of Jefferson, Iowa, his brothers Kay McComb (Emy Lou) of Lehigh Acres,
Florida, and Richard McComb (BJ) of Key Largo, Florida, his daughter Elaine Scott of Marysville, Washington, his son Edward Scott of Seattle and many nieces, nephews,  grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Francis, Gail, and Andy.

Services will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
