Darrell Legore

Darrell Legore, the son of Harold P. and Marguerite (Coon) Legore, was born March 10, 1931 on his grandparent’s farm in Greene County near Farlin, Iowa and passed from this life July 4, 2018 at Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care facility in Jefferson, Iowa. He lived his life to the age of 87 years, three months and 24 days.

Darrell grew up on his parent’s farm near Churdan and attended and graduated from Churdan High School in 1949. On June 14, 1953, Darrell and Joanne Toliver were united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Churdan. Three daughters were born to this union. After their marriage, they lived in Churdan where Darrell did farm work and shelled corn for Dale Barnes. In the fall of 1954, they moved to a farm east of Churdan and started farming. When Darrell’s parents moved to Churdan in 1960, Darrell and Joanne moved to his parent’s farm where they have since made their home. Darrell retired from active farming in 1998. In retirement, he enjoyed fishing, gardening and time spent with his family.

Darrell was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Churdan where he served many years on the church board, various committees and as a church usher. Darrell also served on the Paton-Churdan School Board and was a member of the Churdan Lion’s Club.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife, Joanne; three daughters: Renaye (Brent) Lindgren of Churdan, Rochelle (Dr. Thomas Fagg) Guess of Jefferson and Angela (David) Fatka of Paton; six grandchildren: Amanda (Lindgren) Helms, Nathan Guess, Tricia (Lindgren) Loeffler, Dr. Cara (Guess) Sawyer, Lucas Fatka and Callie (Fatka) Ayers; seven step-grandchildren: Marissa (Sergio) Romero, Alyssa (Mak) Zachajasz, John Fagg, Stephen Fagg, Thomas Fagg, Blake Fagg and Blaine Fagg, 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Donna Hyland of Utah and Lois Curtis of Ames; exchange student, Jon (Janny) Kravetz and their children (Jacob, Rebecca and Hannah) of Boston; and many nieces and nephews all of whom he loved. Those who preceded him in death were his parents and three brothers-in-law.

A celebration of Darrell’s life was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Churdan with Pastor Bobby Palmer and Rev. John Swoyer officiating. A special recording of “Midnight Cry” was played at the service. Instrumental music was played by Danille Curtis with “It is Well with My Soul” as a closing hymn. Serving as casket bearers were Nathan Guess, Lucas Fatka, James Helms, Jamie Loeffler, Todd Sawyer and Jon Ayers. Burial was made in the Highland Township Cemetery in Churdan.
