Barbara Moore

Barbara Moore, age 85, of Boone and formerly of Jefferson, passed away peacefully on April 7 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone.

Barbara Ellen “Barb” (McQuillen) Moore was born in Tipton on April 23, 1934, the daughter of Cyrus and Bernice McQuillen.

The family moved to Jefferson, where in 1952, Barbara graduated from Jefferson High School. She received her teaching certificate from Boone Junior College in Boone and was a teacher in both Belmond and Jefferson. She later became a teacher’s aide for the Boone Community Schools and retired after more than two decades with the district.

In 1953, Barbara married Kenneth O’Neal. The marriage ended in divorce.

On June 26, 1960, Barbara married Joseph “Joe” Moore in Jefferson.

Barb and Joe enjoyed taking road trips that ranged from both the East and West coasts, to impromptu sightseeing trips to northeast Iowa. They were both very active in the Lincoln Highway Association and made many trips along that historic route.

Barbara enjoyed flower gardening, reading, antiquing and collecting, had a love of World War II history, and she was a longtime and proud supporter of Iowa Public Television.

Barbara was a member of the Boone First United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi and was active in Questers. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and dear friends. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and grandmother.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe (in 2019); brothers Donald McQuillen and Richard McQuillen; and an infant brother.

She is survived by her children: Kathleen Funck and husband Jim, of Gig Harbor, Wash.; Patricia Moore, of Boone; Theron Moore, of Boone; and Gregory Moore and wife Kelli, of Boone; brother David McQuillen and wife Pat, of Jefferson; sisters-in-law: Sandra McQuillen, of Iowa City, and Sharon McQuillen, of Jefferson; seven grandchildren: Kristina Funck and husband Matthew Jasperson, Anna Funck, Chelsea Moore, Drew Moore, Lucas Moore, Marshall Moore and Mitchell Moore; two great-grandsons: Bryer Moore and Wynn Jasperson; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara’s children and extended family wish to express a very special thank you to all the staff at the Eastern Star Masonic Home for the loving care that they provided to our mother. It is deeply appreciated.

In memory of Barbara, memorials may be directed to Iowa Public Television. Online condolences may be made at schroedermemorialchapel.com.

Due to state and federal guidance pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no public visitation or service at this time. Per her wishes, Barbara has been cremated.

A memorial service, followed by burial in the Squire Boone Cemetery in Boone, will be held at a later date.

The Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
