Alice Elizabeth Shriver

Alice Elizabeth Shriver, 93, a lifelong resident of Jefferson, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Greene County Medical Center Extended Care on Sunday, June 25, 2023.  She was born on July 28, 1929 in rural Greene County to Gladys (Ermling) and Leon Morlan.

Alice grew up on a farm with two brothers and twin sisters.  All the children attended country school, walking most of the time, sometimes in very snowy, cold weather.  She recalled coming home from school to the aroma of her mother’s fresh, baked bread.  Alice’s mother was a very good cook and those talents passed on to Alice, her sisters, as well as to Alice’s daughters and granddaughters.

Alice graduated high school at age 16.  She worked at a local dress shop, Bon Ton, for several years, and then as a teller at Jefferson State Bank.  While working there she met Lloyd Douglas Shriver.  His sister, Jessie, and a friend of hers who roomed at his mother’s Zelma’s house, were instrumental in them meeting.

Alice and Doug were married on January 9, 1953.  They became the parents of three children: Ann Elizabeth, Kara Sue, and Alan Douglas.

Alice was happy being a stay-at-home mom.  She enjoyed cooking, sewing quilts, making pies and bread.  Her specialty was cinnamon bread.  All her family and friends were blessed with loaves of cinnamon bread for Christmas and on other special occasions!

In 1984 Doug died of cancer, which was a very sad time, as Alice was devoted to him.  After his passing, Alice became very active as a volunteer in the community.  She was especially involved in the First Presbyterian Church, as a deacon and on the women’s committee, serving funeral dinners.  Whenever the church doors were open, she was there as a faithful member.

Alice worked for many years with The American Cancer Society.  She headed the local blood-mobile drive and devoted many hours as a volunteer in the hospital auxiliary.  She enjoyed involvement with her sisters in P.E.O., Friday Club, and numerous bridge clubs.

Alice loved her family and was always happiest when everyone was together.  She is survived by her three children:  daughters, Ann (Scott) Brandt and Kara (Ian) Bullock; and a son, Alan Shriver (Deb);  grandchildren: [Ann’s family] Emily and Jeff Nichols (and their children: Amelia, Natalie and Ethan), and Erin and Alan Helmer;  [Kara’s family] Ryan and Madeline Bullock, Jillian and Cameron Young (and their children: Mack, Flora, Charlie, Teddy, Graham), and Thomas and Katie Bullock, (and their children Heidi, Sammy, Eliza, and another girl due in October).  Also surviving is Alice’s special sister, Doris Alex.

A special thanks to all the staff and people at GCMC Extended Care.  She was content and very well cared for during her final years.

Memorials in honor of Alice Shriver may be directed to the Greene County Medical Center Auxiliary.  Services were arranged by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home, Jefferson.
