Jefferson farmer Jim Andrew, a Vietnam-era veteran who retired from the Army as a captain, delivered the Memorial Day address Monday in the Jefferson Cemetery. At one point, he addressed the crowd’s younger veterans and gestured to the color guard seated to his left. “These gentlemen are way past their prime,” Andrew commented, drawing laughs before continuing with a serious plea for them to join their local American Legion or VFW posts. “We need younger people. The day is going to come when the chairs are going to be empty if the young veterans of Grenada, Desert Storm and the War on Terror don’t step forward.”
