Changes coming to snow parking
Staff report
At the request of Jefferson Police, the city council Tuesday voted in favor of a first reading to amend the ordinance governing parking during snow removal between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Two more readings and approvals are needed, but if passed, residents would be required to be clear of city-owned streets whenever one-half inch of snow has fallen.
The amendment would drop the “between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.” language, forcing residents to clear the street of their vehicles anytime snow removal is taking place.
City code now reads: “No person shall park, abandon or leave unattended any vehicle on any public street, alley or city-owned off-street parking area between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. from the time there has been an accumulation of one-half inch of snow until the snow has ceased to fall and has been removed from said street. The provisions of this section shall apply only between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.”
The provisions are for individual downtown parking areas and streets required to be clear from 2 to 6 a.m.
A $50 fine is levied for unlawful parking during snow removal.
